Builders Compensation Proposal [SIP - 1.7]

Summary

Assign Philipp Zimmerer as the Chief Strategy Officer, Hendo Verbeek as Head of Risk, and James Childs as Chief Protocol Architect.

Background

Spool is being created since the second half of 2020 by a DAO that governed the early stages of development as well as the LBP conducted in December 2021. This “preDAO” appointed builders that scoped out the development of Spool version 1 (v1).

These builders were assigned vested tokens as a compensation for their work, these tokens have been split between the builders and will be re-staked in the protocol as they vest to allow the builders to participate in the governance of the protocol they have built.

The builders have so far not taken any fiat-denominated remuneration whatsoever, be it before or after the LBP in December. In fact, the builders have largely pre-paid all external expenses before funding via the LBP came in, as the joint treasury before then was reserved to fund liquidity for the LBP.

In September 2022, v1 of Spool was finally delivered in full with the deployment of the “Create a Spool” feature. This means that the scope that was initially assigned to the builders in 2020 has been fully completed and that Spool can now technically run as a self-governed DAO with a revenue-generating protocol.

However, DeFi has grown and changed massively since the inception of Spool, so a new scope for a v2 of Spool has been mapped out, dramatically improving the Spool Protocol and multiplying the addressable market of Spool.

With a strong treasury of over 15 million USD worth of capital, which is largely deployed and earning yield through our very own protocol, the Spool DAO is in a perfect position to grow with the market and capture a large share of the market segment (decentralised finance infrastructure) it helped create in the first place.

From the initial builder team, 3 core members remain and are hereby applying for formal roles within the Spool DAO builders team. Concretely, these members have been working full-time on Spool since the inception of the preDAO and would like to continue by shaping v2 of Spool as well as continue to contribute to the DAO in a meaningful way as a team.

  1. Philipp Zimmerer as Chief Strategy Officer

Phil has led the research and selection process for strategies supported by Spool. He also led the overall strategic positioning of the DAO as a player for financial infrastructure in DeFi, wrote the initial Litepaper, led the exploration of product market fit for Spool, researched and created token economic models for Spool, including the concept of voSPOOL, and has overall provided direction for the project.

He also acted as a spokesperson for the DAO leading up to and during the LBP, which successfully raised over 16 million USD for the treasury. As an active participant and voice in the Discord, he communicates with the community on behalf of the team and acts as an open ear and vital link between builders and community.

  1. Hendo Verbeek as Head of Risk

Hendo has led the management, updating and maintenance of the official Spool Labs Risk Model as well as the maintenance of all official Spool Documentation, including the technical documentation.

He has filled the role of subject matter expert by speaking on the subject of risk in DeFi on calls, interviews, in articles and in all relevant communication channels.

Hendo maintains Spool’s relationships with insurance providers and manages potential integrations with insurance providers as well as potential third-party risk model providers.

Lastly, Hendo researches, reviews, vets and pre-selects potential new Spool Supported Strategies.

  1. James Childs as Chief Protocol Architect

James has led the technical development of Spool, effectively channelling the vision for the protocol into action and hard code. He has managed and orchestrated the development of the Spool Protocol, acting as a CTO in the early stages of Spool. He is currently filling a role as pivot between our developers Solidant and the rest of the Spool builders.

James is coordinating feature rollouts and audits for the live v1 implementation of Spool while at the same managing the scoping and architecture of Spool v2. Specifically, this means translating and prioritising the feature requests coming from Phil as well as the BD team, which represents the wishes of our current pipelined integration partners.
